# Orienting your Proteus - How, When, and Why

Orienting Proteus is vital for ensuring the accuracy of the data you are seeing and collecting on Proteus. This process of running Proteus through its hard end ranges of motion tells the machine where its handle is in 3D space.

You will be prompted to run Proteus through this sensor orientation each time the machine is powered on. We recommend running Proteus through this procedure every day to ensure accurate data collection.

Tip: You can also orient Proteus’ sensors by completing the same orientation steps in Freestyle mode!
